According to Centre for monitoring Indian economy figures, Jammu and Kashmir has 22.2% unemployment rate which is even higher than national level unemployment rate of 7.1% recorded across India
Alarming unemployment has been recurrent even before covid 19 pandemic. in 2021 Jammu and Kashmir service selection board advertised 8000 class fourth posts and 5.4 lac aspirants appeared in the said exam. The point is that the class ivth exam was influxed by overqualified youth irrespective of the modest pay due to greater job security ascribed to it. In accounts Assistant exam more than two lakh candidates competed for less than thousand posts. In the absence of strong private sector, big industries, corporations, the intense competition travels across various categories of government jobs. shockingly the advertisement for the few government jobs attracts thousands of applications. the tendency itself has rendered deep crisis for those with lower educational qualifications who strive for modest government jobs and for whom such employment has traditionally been Envisaged.
In the backdrop of large number of skilled and over qualified people languishing in the throes of unemployment, the government is working day and night to promote entrepreneurship and industry Driven culture. In addition to various centrally sponsored schemes the government of J&K has also started industry driven initiatives, strengthening of mission youth department, handholding of enterpreneurs , ease of doing business, attracting investments from foreign, creation of land bank, strengthening of skill development, new industrial policy etc are the steps to address the unemployment issue in Jammu and Kashmir
It has been seen that Youth of jammu and kashmir are not taking enterpreneurship as career and the main reason is enterpreneurship as a subject is not part of mainstream education. In a world where we are preparing students for jobs that do not yet exist there is no other education then enterpreneurship that can prepare us to deal with the challenge of unemployment.
The need is to have a model career counselling centres to guide the youth since early stages of life and to imbibe the concept of entrepreneurship , capacity building, improved market related training, inclusion of marginalised sections, public private partnership, skill development to match market needs so that we can create job creators rather than job seekers
Jammu and kashmir is rich in natural resources and has a lot of potential in tourism , farm industry, food processing , Delhi enter Panna ship mushroom cultivation, handicrafts, handlooms, hospitality, medical tourism etc
the government is creating robust ecosystem for growth and empowerment of enterpreneurs and is paving a strong foundation to nurture the enterpreneurship abilities and skills of the youth .the youth needs to realise that their fulfilment of dignified employment cannot happen in isolation but is linked to how the sea of opportunities are explored by them at the initial stage of their youth
