In the sprawling tapestry of India’s diverse and vivacious landscape emerge individuals whose lives are not merely inspiring narratives, but institutions in and of themselves. Shah Faesal, the Topper of the IAS exam in 2009, is a model of dedication, perseverance, and success. He is an institution within himself, a beacon of hope for many, and a source of national pride for the entire country. Shah Faesal, who grew up in the picturesque Jammu and Kashmir district of Kupwara, has left an indelible impression on the history of Indian civil services. His journey from the peaceful valley of Lolab to becoming the first Muslim to top the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) examination in 2009 is a remarkable demonstration of his unwavering determination and unyielding character.
The ascension of Shah Faesal to the pinnacle of India’s civil services not only brought joy, dignity, pride and respect to the people of Kashmir, but also served as an inspiration to innumerable aspirants across the nation. His story transcends regional and religious boundaries, uniting aspirants from disparate backgrounds in their pursuit of educational and public service excellence.
A visit to Chanakyapuri a few years ago, the center for IAS coaching hub, points out the profound impact of Shah Faesal’s voyage. There, you will find hundreds of aspirants from Kashmir and other regions of India, which are inspired by his accomplishments. It is a testament to the universality of his inspiration that Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and others have embraced his words of wisdom. The IAS wasn’t the final straw of Shah Faesal’s voyage; it was just the beginning. He currently serves as Deputy Secretary in the Government of India’s Department of Culture, where he continues to contribute to the nation’s growth and development. Nonetheless, Shah Faesal’s path to prosperity was not devoid of obstacles. At age 16, he was confronted with the tragic slaying of his father, an event that could have derailed the ambitions of many. However, like a lion, Shah Faesal transformed adversity into a challenge and emerged victorious. He not only overcame adversity, but also earned the highest score on one of India’s most difficult examinations. His academic trajectory is equally as impressive as his public service career. He exhibited remarkable intellectual prowess and a never-ending hunger for knowledge as a qualified doctor and gold medalist in his profession. When he wrote a letter to the Education Department in the fourth or fifth grade, his inherent brilliance was already apparent. His vocabulary, ideas, and foresight were so exceptional that he was identified as a future prodigy. His educational journey began at a public school, where he began his ascent to academic excellence. Throughout his school years, he rated first in every subject, laying the groundwork for a path that would lead him to the apex of the civil services.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Shah Faesal’s administrative experience demonstrated his unwavering dedication to public service. He was the Director of Education, the Managing Director of the Power Department, and the Bandipora District Collector. In each of these positions, he introduced revolutionary concepts and reforms, challenging the status quo and pursuing excellence. His unwavering opposition to corruption is one of Shah Faesal’s defining characteristics. Since the beginning of his career, he has taken a firm stance against corruption in every administrative department he has served. His commitment to eradicating corruption has earned him the respect and admiration of both his peers and the general public. Notably, Shah Faesal has been at the vanguard of the struggle against substance abuse, which remains a pressing concern for many communities. His resolute efforts against drug-related issues have not only had a significant impact, but have also provided hope and inspiration to the youth and the general populace.
Shah Faesal remains a humble and down-to-earth individual despite his numerous accomplishments and honors, endearing himself to all who have had the privilege of interacting with him. In summary, Shah Faesal is an institution, a visionary leader, and a source of inspiration for future generations. His innovative ideas, unwavering dedication to public service, and extraordinary accomplishments will continue to inspire and direct people from all aspects of life. We are confident that his legacy will endure for centuries as we send him our best wishes for a long and prosperous life.
