The Sukanya Samriddhi Account is a government-supported savings scheme introduced under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme to ensure the well-being of the girl child. This scheme is designed in such a way that it helps parents save for the education and future of the girl child. The amount that can be deposited in the account ranges from a minimum of Rs. 250 to a maximum of Rs. 1.5 lakhs annually, with an attractive interest rate of around 8.2% and triple tax benefits (EEE) provided.

One of the most significant steps that can be taken towards building a stronger and more inclusive society is the empowerment of women. The Government of India has introduced various programs with the aim of ensuring the well-being of women by providing them with better opportunities in the fields of education, finance, and more. Among the various programs introduced by the government, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is an important savings scheme that helps the family open a special account in the name of the daughter.

It encourages parents to set aside money for their daughters for future expenses such as higher education or marriage. The program not only offers financial assistance to daughters, but it also tries to alter the way people view daughters. With high interest rates and tax advantages, this program encourages people to invest in the future of their daughters, considering it a necessity for a progressive world.

The main aim of this scheme is to encourage parents or guardians to start saving early for their daughters. It has been seen that this scheme can help parents or guardians save a large sum of money by depositing small amounts regularly. It will help in easy financial planning and reduce the burden of spending money on education and marriage.

More to the point, the scheme encourages a favourable change in social attitudes. When families begin to save with the express purpose of investing in the future of their daughters, it strengthens the notion that daughters are important members of the family whose education and growth should be invested in and supported.

The relatively high interest rate of the Sukanya Samriddhi Account is one of the most appealing aspects of the scheme as compared to most other savings plans. Currently, the interest rate stands at approximately 8.2 per cent per annum, and this enables savings to increase gradually with time. The deposited amount grows considerably in the long run since the interest is compounded every year.

The minimum amount that parents or guardians can deposit in the account is 250 per year and the maximum is 1.5 lakh per year. This flexibility renders the scheme affordable to families with varying economic statuses. Even low-income families can start with small deposits and add more and more as their financial status improves.

The maturity period of this account is 21 years after it is opened. This provides families with an opportunity to save for the girl child’s future. However, once the girl child turns 18, up to 50 per cent of the amount can be withdrawn to cater to her educational needs. The account can be opened for any girl child below the age of 10. This ensures that a strong financial fund is established for her future. On average, a family can open an account for two girls, although this can be done in cases of twins, too. The account can be opened in a post office or a bank, after which it can be operated by the girl child herself.

Financial Advantages and Tax Benefits.

The other significant advantage of the Sukanya Samriddhi Account is the tax advantage. The scheme is classified as an EEE type of taxation. This implies that the deposits in the account are subject to tax deductions as provided in Section 80C of the Income Tax Act. The interest charged on deposits is fully tax-free, and the sum that is withdrawn at maturity is also tax-free.

These advantages make the scheme especially appealing to middle-class and working families who desire a safe and tax-efficient method of saving towards the future of their daughters.

Social Impact of the Scheme

It also has a significant social impact. It helps in changing the old mindset regarding daughters. When parents start saving for their daughters, they start viewing their daughters as a future investment rather than a liability. When parents start saving for the education and growth of their daughters, they start viewing their daughters as equals. Thus, the scheme indirectly contributes to the empowerment of women.

In regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, where financial conditions may affect education, such programs are vital in helping families. Most parents feel at ease when they know that their daughters are financially secure, when they want to pursue education or any other serious goal.

The scheme also helps in developing financial awareness among the people. They open accounts in banks or post offices and get to know more about the banking system and the importance of saving money regularly. These steps help in bringing people closer to financial institutions, particularly in economically backward regions.

In the long run, this promotes good financial practices such as saving, budgeting, and long-term planning and boosts trust in banks and financial services.

By raising awareness about the benefits of the scheme in schools, local authorities, and community organisations can further promote it. When parents understand how small savings can grow into a meaningful financial resource, they are more likely to participate.

While the Sukanya Samriddhi scheme offers many benefits, awareness still plays a crucial role in its success. In some areas, families are still unaware of the scheme or do not fully understand how it works. It is therefore important that such campaigns are carried out, especially in the weaker sections of the economy. Schools, leaders, and government offices can help in creating awareness among parents about the need for early financial planning for girls.

Conclusion

The Sukanya Samriddhi account is not just an account where people can deposit their money and earn interest on it. It is an important step towards the empowerment of the girl child in the country.

With its high interest rates, tax benefits, and long-term saving potential, the scheme is an effective way for parents to enable their daughters to achieve their dreams and aspirations.

As more and more people become aware of the scheme, it can be an effective tool in the social revolution that will ensure that every girl child in the country gets an opportunity to live a successful and secure life.
